How to Measure Your Stair
Getting accurate measurements is the first step to a perfect fit. Follow this simple guide before sending us your enquiry.
Why Measurements Matter
Every staircase is different. The space beneath your stairs is unique to your home — the height, width, depth and angle all affect what we can build. Accurate measurements mean we can give you a precise quote and avoid any surprises on fitting day.
Width
Measure the full width of the opening from one side wall to the other. If there is a door frame or architrave, measure the clear opening width inside it.
Height for stairs with a turn
This measurement only applies if your stairs turn at the bottom (e.g. an L-shaped or winder staircase). Measure the height from the floor up to the underside of the stair string, taken tight against the newel post at the point where the stairs turn. This is the most critical height dimension as it determines the maximum height of your unit at that corner. If your stairs run straight without a turn, you can skip this measurement.
Obstructions
If there are any meters or fuse boards inside the void, please include a photo of them with your enquiry.
Helpful Tips
Use a steel tape measure for accuracy — fabric tapes can sag and give a false reading.
Measure twice, record once. Double-check each dimension before writing it down.
Take photos from multiple angles — a picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to unusual stair shapes.
Don't worry if you're unsure — we offer a free survey and will take all the measurements ourselves before any work begins.
